PD I – Exciting, Fun, and Scary all at the Same Time
- 2005
By: Rachel Baker,
Administrative Assistant, City of Medina
As a “newbie” to
the clerk profession, I was excited with the
opportunity to attend this year’s Northwest Clerk’s
Institute. I looked forward to gaining job
knowledge through the educational components and
developing a support network, but also felt
apprehensive about the new and unfamiliar experience
and feared leaving behind my personal
responsibilities and the comfort of everyday
routine.

The
University of Puget Sound offered a scenic and
beautiful backdrop for the Institute. The campus’s
towering evergreens stood guard over initial
insecurity and vulnerability; the majestic brick
buildings instilled a professional and academic
atmosphere for learning; the walking paths and
expansive lawns urged exploration to pursue
opportunities; and the clock tower chimes promoted
introspection.
Acceptance was
immediately gained through sharing sessions and
meals with fellow participants and confidence was
gained by learning more about the role of City
Clerk. The process allowed us to learn from one
another and to develop a professional network.
The professional
development portion to the training met my
expectations, but escaping personal development was
unavoidable and unexpected. The division between
these two sides to the Institute blurred, and made
for an unforgettable and powerful experience.
I have since
returned to face my responsibilities and everyday
routine, feeling empowered by the knowledge obtained
and experiences gained from the Institute.
Thank you
everyone who contributed to the success of this
year’s PD I. I am looking forward to reconnecting
with everyone next year during PD II.
