Northwest Clerks Institute – PD II Classes a Success - 2005
By Kathryn J. Bratcher, CMC, Clerk of
the Council, Snohomish County
Northwest Clerks Institute Director Dema Harris can put a check mark
in the “success” column for another informative, educational
Professional Development series. Sixteen city, town, and transit
clerks and administrative personnel from all across Washington state
attended the Professional Development II (PD II) classes held June
12-17th at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.
Institute attendees had high praises for the presenters and subjects
covered during the five training days. A session entitled “Managing
Human Resources” by co-presenters Janet May and Janice Corbin seemed
to be particularly popular and most attendees said they came away
from that session feeling like they had learned something that could
immediately be applied in the workplace.

Aside from the formal training sessions, it was unanimous among all
attendees I spoke with that perhaps the most valuable thing to come
away from PD II with is the camaraderie and friendship developed
during the week. All but six people from the 2004 PD I session were
enrolled in this year’s PD II. Launie Wright from Intercity
Transit put it best when she said, “How wonderful to reunite, share,
and see the growth we all experienced over that time. Our class
fell right back into the strong team we had developed by the end of
PD I. The new folks that joined us this year were wonderful and fit
right in right away. Sharing and learning from each other was the
most rewarding for me.”
Congratulations to Director Dema Harris for a successful week and to
all those who completed PD II and are that much closer to achieving
Certified Municipal Clerk status. To learn more about how you can
